Is it Time for an Air Conditioning Tune-Up?

We're in the middle of the summer and we're using our air conditioners more than usual. Before long, the seasons will change and you'll need your car's heater and defroster to be working well. Your vehicle's air conditioning system is very important to your personal comfort (and sometimes safety) all year round. The summer is a great time to get your air conditioner and heater checked out and tuned up as needed.

First, let's look at some of the common signs you might have heating or air conditioning problems:

     • Air not as cold or as warm as you want it to be.

     • Defroster taking too much time to clear windows.

     • Unpleasant smells coming from vents.

     • Air conditioning only works when car is in full motion, not when driving slow or stopped.

Air Conditioning Repairs and Maintenance

In some cases where the air isn't getting as cool as desired, the air conditioner's coolant (aka Freon) may just need to be recharged. In other cases, it could be the sign of a leak somewhere in the system. This can be dangerous, so you want to get it checked out and repaired as soon as possible.

Oftentimes, weak air conditioner or heater performance is a result of poorly maintained vents or dirty air filters. A standard heating-A/C tune-up at LightHouse Automotive will clean up those vents and make sure the coolant level is where it should be.

Replacing Air Filters

The other important factor is the air filters in your vehicle. There is the standard engine air filter that makes sure clean air is flowing through the engine. This should be checked and replaced periodically for improved performance. Then, there is the cabin air filter that keeps the air cleaner in the automobile's passenger cabin. If it is too dirty or worn out, it will dramatically affect the air quality that you are breathing inside the car. Get the cabin air filter checked with each maintenance service visit and replace it as needed. Your lungs will thank you, and it will help the performance of your air conditioning and heating system.
