What’s That Clunking Noise From the Rear of My Car?

June 27, 2025

If you hear a clunking sound coming from the rear of your vehicle when driving over bumps or making turns, it’s not something you should ignore. This sound is the first warning sign of worn or damaged suspension components. Even if the car still drives reasonably well, something is loose, broken, or out of place—and it’s only going to get worse.

Letting the issue go can turn a relatively inexpensive fix into a more complicated repair. Understanding the possible causes of rear-end clunking can help you take prompt action and ensure your vehicle remains safe and smooth on the road.

Worn Suspension Bushings

Bushings are rubber or polyurethane components designed to absorb shocks and cushion the connection points between suspension parts. Over time, they degrade due to age, heat, and road salt. When they crack or fall apart, metal components start to hit each other, creating a distinct clunk when you hit a bump or pothole.

If bushings are the issue, you may also feel extra looseness in the rear end, especially while turning or accelerating.

Loose or Failing Shock Absorbers

Shock absorbers are meant to dampen the movement of your wheels and maintain contact with the road. If one is leaking, broken, or improperly mounted, you may hear a knocking or clunking sound during bumps or dips. The rear of the vehicle might bounce more than usual, and handling could feel sloppy or unstable.

A failing shock absorber won’t just cause noise but will also reduce traction, increase stopping distance, and speed up tire wear.

Damaged or Disconnected Sway Bar Links

Sway bars help stabilize your vehicle when cornering. The links that connect the sway bar to your suspension can loosen, break, or wear out over time. A broken or disconnected sway bar link will cause a rhythmic clunk as the suspension moves.

You might also notice the vehicle feels less stable when turning or has increased body roll on curves.

Exhaust System Contact

Sometimes, the issue isn’t with the suspension at all. If your exhaust hangers are damaged or the system has shifted due to rust or impact, parts of the exhaust can contact the undercarriage and produce clunking sounds. This is most likely to occur on rough roads or during sharp turns, especially in older or modified vehicles.

A quick under-vehicle inspection can often spot a loose muffler or tailpipe that’s bumping against other components.

Rear Differential or Driveshaft Issues

If your vehicle is rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, the clunking noise may be coming from drivetrain components. A worn U-joint, loose driveshaft, or failing differential mount can cause clunking, especially during acceleration, deceleration, or gear changes.

These types of noises are often deeper in tone and may feel like they’re coming from under the center or rear of the vehicle.

Loose or Broken Suspension Hardware

In some cases, bolts or fasteners can work their way loose over time, especially after a rough impact or poor road conditions. Even slightly loose hardware in the rear suspension can cause knocking, clunking, or rattling sounds.

It’s also possible that something was missed or improperly torqued during a previous repair or tire change.

Don’t Wait Until It Gets Worse

A clunk is a signal. Ignoring it can lead to greater wear on your tires, increased suspension stress, poor ride quality, and safety concerns. Even if the car still feels driveable, a quick inspection can help prevent bigger issues before they happen.

Whether it’s a worn-out bushing, a broken shock mount, or something more serious, catching the problem early is always easier on your schedule and budget.
